World IPv6 Launch is on 6^th June 2012, What is it meant to you?

Inter­net Soci­ety announced IPv6 Launch is on 6^th June 2012, Which means, IPv6 will be per­man­ently enabled for their products and ser­vices by major ISPs, makers of home net­work­ing equip­ment and Web com­pan­ies on 6^th June 2012.

The IPv6 was tested by some major com­pan­ies and ISPs pre­vi­ously on June 8 last year. The Par­ti­cipants in the test includes Akamai, Face­book, Google and Yahoo, But for the IPv6 launch day 250 par­ti­cipants going to enable IPv6 permanently.

Com­mit­ted ISPs are:

• AT&T
• Com­cast
• Free Tele­com
• Inter­node
• KDDI
• Time Warner Cable
• XS4ALL

Com­mit­ted net­work equip­ment man­u­fac­tur­ers are:

• Cisco
• D‑Link

Web com­pan­ies par­ti­cip­at­ing ini­tially are:

• Face­book
• Google
• Microsoft Bing
• Yahoo!

Con­tent deliv­ery net­work (CDN) pro­viders par­ti­cipants are :

• Akamai
• Lime­light

What does it meant to you?

Mostly Inter­net users will not be affected, they should enjoy unin­ter­rup­ted ser­vice. In rare cases, users may still exper­i­ence con­nectiv­ity issues when vis­it­ing par­ti­cip­at­ing Websites. 

You can vis­it an IPv6 test site to check if con­nectiv­ity. If the test indic­ates a prob­lem, Then dis­able IPv6 or ask your ISP to help fix the problem. 

It is import­ant to note that par­ti­cip­at­ing web­sites still con­tin­ue to sup­port access over IPv4. You should­n’t worry if you aren’t able to obtain access to the IPv6 Inter­net. World IPv6 Launch will simply intro­duce IPv6 in par­al­lel to IPv4.

What If you want to get Ready?

Users with mod­ern oper­at­ing sys­tems and devices will start using IPv6 auto­mat­ic­ally. The major­ity of users should­n’t notice the trans­ition at all. IPv4 access will still be avail­able as com­pan­ies per­man­ently enable IPv6 on their products and services.

Check your home router­’s doc­u­ment­a­tion to see if it sup­port’s IPv6, and con­tact your ISP to ask if IPv6 is deployed in your ser­vice area.
